Sculptural family residence

TC_Dioni_Pikermi.jpg

This project concerns a family residence in Dioni, at the foothills of Mount Penteli. Set on an irregular plot, the proposal approaches the landscape with a distinctly sculptural sensibility.

Positioned at the apex of a triangular block between two streets set at different levels, the site’s geometry and natural slope informed the design from the outset. The building aligns with the surrounding street axes and plot boundaries, translating the terrain’s relief into built form. To the north, it presents a protective, almost defensive frontage, while to the south-east it opens towards a courtyard and swimming pool, embracing the outdoor living areas.

The house is composed of two primary volumes — a triangular prism and a rectangular form. The void between them defines the principal entrance at ground level and becomes a bridge connecting the bedrooms above. Orientation, light quality and programme continually alter the perception of these volumes, allowing the house to shift in character throughout the day.

The roofs intensify this sense of movement. At times they read as slender, floating planes; at others, as folded surfaces that wrap and extend around the volumes beneath, playing a decisive role in the building’s elevations.

In a sparsely developed setting, the residence emerges as a sculptural object embedded within the landscape. Its folded walls and carved openings admit natural light into the interior, while its articulated masses appear to crystallise the forces of the terrain into a coherent architectural form.
