20-House Development

This proposal was for a residential scheme on the southern edge of Coggeshall, designed to reflect the village’s soft pastel material palette in brick and render. The proposal reinterprets the local vernacular of steep roofs, gables, and textured plaster façades within a contemporary composition of simple forms and precise, flush detailing.

The layout responds to the surrounding landscape and historic context, creating a dispersed cluster of detached and semi-detached homes within a tree-lined neighbourhood. Sustainability principles guided every stage materials were locally sourced to reduce embodied carbon, and the design aligns with the RIBA 2030 Climate Challenge.

Cook Field embodies a contextual and contemporary approach to housing design — one that respects Coggeshall’s material traditions and spatial character while addressing the environmental responsibilities of modern architecture. The combination of pastel brick and render, proportional rigour, and restrained detailing ensures that the development sits comfortably within its setting, contributing positively to the village’s evolving identity.
