Modern rural dwelling

The project proposes a brownfield, barn-like dwelling at the village fringe, forming an appropriate and sensitive conclusion to the settlement where it meets the estuary of the River Colne. The house adopts the character of a contemporary timber cabin, sitting comfortably and sympathetically within its rural setting.

The design responds directly to the site’s natural gradient as the land slopes towards the river, using this change in level to create a staggered internal arrangement, while the external terrace aligns naturally with the surrounding ground levels. The proposed materials are selected for their ability to weather and develop a natural patina over time, allowing the building to blend gradually into its context while reflecting the tones and textures of the local palette in this rural location close to the coast.
